The Secret Ingredient for a Healthier, Happier Me in 2025

The Secret Ingredient for a Healthier, Happier Me in 2025

Health

Updated 12 April 2025

2025 is my year to refocus on health and wellness, so I’ve dived deep into habits and actions I can take to make that happen. I’ve decided to add a new daily habit by adding collagen to my supplements starting tomorrow. Why? Because let’s face it – my body has been sending signals that it needs a little extra love. Stiff joints? Check. Occasional back pain? Yep. Less flexibility than I had a decade ago? Absolutely! Heavy eye-lids and sagging skin? If it was any point in complaining about gravity, I would. And let’s not forget my vitamin B1 deficiency and high blood pressure that was discovered at the end of last year. So, I’m diving into collagen to see if it can make a noticeable difference, and if it can become the secret ingredient for a healthier, happier me. And you’re invited to follow along on my journey (and kinda be my accountability partner)!

Collagen Challenge 2025 - Eva Hyllestad

Oh, and before we get started – here’s a photo of me, no filter, no makeup, the day before I started my new daily habit with collagen intake.

I’ll be re-writing this blog post every 4 week for a couple of months at least, and I will be adding a new photos of my face for you and me to see if we can notice any changes in my skin.

You’ll be able to judge for yourself!

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, making up about 30% of our total protein content. Think of it as the glue that holds us together – it provides structure to our skin, bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Without it, we’d be sagging, aching, and creaking more than we’d like!

The 28 Types of Collagen & The Two Most Popular Types

Science has identified 28 different types of collagen, but over 90% of the collagen in humans is type I & III collagen.

Collagen types I, II, and III are three collagen types used for supplements. Collagen type I is mainly found in marine collagen. Collagen type II is original from chicken collagen and bovine collagen. A mixture of collagen type I and type III can be obtained from porcine collagen and bovine collagen.

The three most common sources of collagen supplements are:

  • Bovine Collagen (from cows) – One of the most commonly used types because it is cheaper to extract. However, up to 3% of people may be allergic to bovine collagen.

  • Porcine Collagen (from pigs) – More similar to human collagen than bovine, making allergies less common.

  • Marine Collagen (from fish) – Extracted from cold-water fish like salmon, this type is absorbed 1.5 times more efficiently than bovine or porcine collagen. Due to its smaller particle size, it enters the bloodstream faster, making it the best option for skin health. Plus, it’s refined to remove any fishy smell while keeping all its nutritional benefits intact.

Since I’m all about efficiency and maximum results, I’ve chosen marine collagen as my go-to. Let’s see how it works!

Collagen in Different Parts of the Body

Collagen isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal. Different types serve different purposes! I’ve discovered that…

Read the Collagen label

Collagen improves skin elasticity & hydration – It helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin that natural, youthful glow!

Supports joints & reduces stiffness – Say goodbye to creaky knees! Collagen helps maintain cartilage and keeps your joints moving smoothly.

Strengthens hair & nails – No more brittle nails or excessive hair shedding. Collagen is a powerhouse for beauty from the inside out!

Boosts bone density – As we age, our bones naturally weaken, but collagen can help keep them strong and healthy.

Aids in gut health & digestion – Collagen supports the gut lining, helping with digestion and reducing bloating.

But be aware of cheap products claiming to have collagen in them – they often don’t even come close to the recommended daily dose of 10 grams! Always check your labels (notice the photo content)!

What Happens to Collagen as We Age?

Bad news: We start losing collagen in our mid-20s! By the time we hit our 40s and 50s, collagen production has dropped significantly. Combine that with modern lifestyle factors like stress, processed foods, and environmental toxins, and we’ve got a recipe for wrinkles, joint pain, and slow recovery. But fear not! We can replenish it with the right foods and supplements.

As I am currently working as an in-house carer – in addition to running my business – for an elderly couple in their 80s and 90s, I’m reminded daily of how humans can age in a not-so-favorable way. It’s both eye-opening and motivating because I plan on living until I’m at least 100 years old – and I have no time to waste if I want my body and mind to be as vibrant as possible for as long as possible. Watching the effects of aging firsthand has reinforced my commitment to taking care of myself now, so I can enjoy a long, active, and fulfilling life in the decades to come!

How Does Collagen Affect Our Brain and Mind as We Age?

Collagen isn’t just about skin, joints, and muscles – it plays a role in brain health too! Here’s how:

Supports Cognitive Function – Glycine, an amino acid in collagen, has been linked to better memory, learning, and overall cognitive performance. As we age, supporting brain function is just as important as keeping our bodies strong.

Improves Sleep Quality – Glycine also promotes restful sleep by calming the nervous system, which is crucial for mental clarity and focus.

Reduces Brain Fog & Boosts Mood – Collagen helps regulate neurotransmitters that affect mood, making it a potential game-changer for reducing anxiety and brain fog.

Neuroprotective Benefits – Some studies suggest that collagen may help protect brain cells from oxidative stress, potentially lowering the risk of neurodegenerative conditions.

Collagen is like a multitasking superhero for both the body and mind!

Can Collagen Help with Sexual Drive?

Yes, collagen can potentially help with sexual drive, although indirectly. Here’s how:

  • Hormonal Balance – Collagen contains amino acids like glycine and proline, which support overall hormonal health. Hormones play a major role in libido, and keeping them balanced can contribute to a healthier sex drive.

  • Improved Blood Circulation – Since collagen helps maintain blood vessel integrity and elasticity, it can enhance circulation. Better circulation means improved blood flow to all areas of the body, including those that affect arousal and performance.

  • Joint & Muscle Support – If joint pain or muscle stiffness is a barrier to intimacy, collagen’s ability to support flexibility and reduce discomfort can make a difference in overall comfort and movement.

  • Boosted Energy & Vitality – When collagen supports gut health, metabolism, and overall well-being, you naturally feel more energetic and vibrant, which can translate to a higher drive.

  • Confidence & Skin Health – Feeling good in your skin can be a game-changer for intimacy. Since collagen improves skin elasticity and hydration, it can enhance body confidence, making you feel more attractive and comfortable in your own skin.

Let’s be real here  – whether you’re a man or a woman, no one wants to feel like their body is betraying them when it comes to intimacy. If keeping up with your partner feels like an Olympic sport, maybe it’s time to give collagen a try!

Can You Get Collagen from Food? Yes, But…

Traditionally, our ancestors got plenty of collagen from a nose-to-tail diet, consuming collagen-rich parts like bones, tendons, and skin. If you want to get collagen naturally, try adding these to your meals:

  • Bone broth (a classic!)

  • Fish (especially the skin!)

  • Egg whites

  • Chicken skin

  • Beef and pork tendons

  • Leafy greens (they help with collagen production!)

But let’s be real – modern diets just don’t cut it. Processed foods dominate, and most people (myself included) don’t eat collagen-rich foods daily. I know that my diet alone isn’t providing all the nutrients my body requires, which is why I’ve chosen to take supplements. By adding collagen to my daily supplement routine, I’m making sure my body gets what it needs without overhauling my entire meal plan.

The Power of Forever Marine Collagen®

If I’m going to take collagen daily, I want the best – and that’s why I’ve chosen Forever Marine Collagen®. It’s an easy, more bioavailable form of collagen, meaning my body can absorb and use it more efficiently compared to other sources.

Forever Marine Collagen® is a highly concentrated liquid formula using a scientifically advanced marine collagen base. It’s designed for better absorption, making it a must-have for anyone serious about skin, joint, and overall health. And the best part? It actually tastes great! With a tart, berry flavor, you can conveniently drink it straight from the sachet—no mixing required!

In addition to marine collagen, it contains:

  • Black pepper extract – A powerful antioxidant.

  • Vitamin C, goji berries, and green tea extract – To fight free radicals and protect your skin.

  • Zinc – To promote healthy skin, hair, and nails, while also supporting connective tissues in joints and skin.

If you’re considering adding collagen to your daily routine, don’t just grab any product off the shelf.

Choose the more efficient, bioavailable form with Forever Marine Collagen®!

What Can Collagen Do for Me?

Here’s what collagen can do for me (and you!):

✔ Improve skin elasticity and hydration (reduce the appearance of gravity?)
✔ Strengthen hair and nails (nothing wrong with that)
✔ Reduce joint pain and stiffness (I need that for sure)
✔ Support gut health (happy gut – higher health & wellness)
✔ Promote heart health and circulation (which can help with my slightly high blood pressure from last year)
✔ Boost muscle mass and metabolism (love the idea of this as I know I’m not physical active enough!)

Sounds good, right? That’s why I’m committing to at least three months of daily marine collagen intake, and I’ll report back with my results.

So, here’s to a healthier, stronger, more vibrant 2025! Stay tuned for my update.

My 30-Day Collagen Journey – Real Talk & Real Results

It’s officially been 30 days since I started taking Forever Marine Collagen® daily – and I can genuinely feel and see the difference!

Let’s start with the skin: I’ve noticed a visible improvement in its texture and overall appearance. It looks and feels smoother, fresher, and more even-toned, and there’s a certain healthy glow that wasn’t there before. But while that’s wonderful, the real transformation has been happening inside my body.

  • My joints feel more flexible, and the stiffness I used to feel – especially in the mornings or after sitting for long periods – has eased noticeably.
  • My feet and legs feel more relaxed, and most importantly: the muscle cramps are gone! I used to struggle with cramps, particularly at night, and it’s been such a relief to sleep through the night comfortably.
  • My muscles feel more at ease overall, especially after long days or physical effort. I recover faster and feel more balanced.
  • Here is my 30-day update photos. What you see is my Day 0 (day before I started taking collagen) and Day 30 images side by side – still completely natural with no makeup, no filters. (I’ve caught a bit of sun since the first photo, so I look a little more tanned now, but nothing else has changed.)
