Have you ever found yourself thinking, “Things will get better when…”?
- When I have more money.
- When I move.
- When I find the right opportunity.
- When life becomes easier.
I’ve been there too. More times than I’d like to admit.
Over the years, I’ve realised something that wasn’t always easy to accept: life doesn’t automatically improve because time passes. It improves because we do.
That’s both the challenge and the beauty of personal growth. While we can’t control everything that happens to us, we can always choose how we respond, what we learn, and who we decide to become.
Growth Often Begins in the Difficult Seasons
If someone had told me a few years ago about some of the challenges I would face, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.
Life has taken me through financial struggles, unexpected setbacks and, more recently, serious health challenges that reminded me just how precious life really is. There were moments when I had no choice but to slow down, reflect and focus on what truly mattered.
Looking back, I wouldn’t choose those experiences, but I can honestly say they’ve shaped me into a stronger and more grateful person.
Sometimes life doesn’t happen to us. Sometimes it happens for us, even when we can’t yet see the lesson.
I mean… Looking back, I’ve realised that some of life’s greatest lessons have come through the challenges I’d never have chosen. At the time they felt unfair, and sometimes harsh, and I sometimes had the thought “Why does this always happen to me?”. Today I can see how they helped shape the person I’m becoming.
The Small Things Have Become the Big Things
One of my greatest teachers lately hasn’t been a bestselling author or a motivational speaker.
It’s been a tiny kitten named Asha.
Watching him discover the world reminds me every day that happiness isn’t always found in life’s biggest achievements. Sometimes it’s found in chasing a leaf blowing across the terrace, stretching out in the morning sunshine, or being completely fascinated by something I’ve walked past a hundred times without noticing.
Children have this ability naturally, and animals never seem to lose it. As adults, however, we often become so focused on the next goal that we forget to enjoy where we are today.
Asha reminds me daily that life is happening now – not someday. (By the way, “someday” doesn’t exist in any calendar I’ve ever seen.)
Gratitude Changed More Than My Attitude
Many years ago, during one of the most difficult periods of my life, I started writing down things I was grateful for.
At first, it felt almost impossible. When life feels heavy, gratitude doesn’t always come naturally. But little by little, something began to change.
My circumstances didn’t improve overnight. The moment I made a definite decision to improve my life, my perspective began to change. And once my perspective changed, so did my decisions, my energy and eventually my life.
That’s one of the reasons I created my free eBook, 100 Days of Gratitude. It isn’t simply about writing a list of things you’re thankful for. It’s about training your mind to notice the good that’s already present, even on the days when it feels hidden.
Gratitude doesn’t ignore life’s challenges. It helps us find the strength to face them and to move through them.
Becoming Better, One Day at a Time
Personal development isn’t about becoming someone you’re not. It’s about becoming more of the person you’re capable of being.
Like many people, I wished change could happen overnight. But over the years I’ve learned that lasting transformation rarely works that way.
Real change happens quietly through the choices we make every single day.
Choosing to read a few pages instead of scrolling social media, Learning a new skill, keeping a promise you’ve made to yourself or showing kindness when it’s easier to complain.
One of my own non-negotiables is gratitude. Even on the days when I don’t feel like writing anything down, I know that’s often when I need it the most. Those few quiet minutes help me reset before the day runs away with me.
These may seem like small actions, but over time they create extraordinary results.
I often say that if we improve by just one percent each day, imagine where we’ll be a year from now. Small improvements compound!
So does neglect. The choice is ours.
Your Future Is Created Today
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that waiting rarely changes anything.
Action does. Growth does. Becoming a little wiser, a little stronger and a little more grateful every day does.
Brian Tracy’s quote captures this perfectly:
“Your life only gets better when you do.”
Perhaps today isn’t about changing your entire life.
Perhaps it’s simply about taking one small step that your future self will thank you for. Because every better life begins with a better version of ourselves.
And it doesn’t take a lot to become a little better than yesterday. It doesn’t have to be something life-changing. It could be speaking a little kinder, keeping one promise you’ve made to yourself, getting up when the alarm goes off instead of pressing snooze, reading a few pages of a good book or taking a short walk. Small actions, repeated consistently, shape the person you’re becoming.
Ask yourself each evening: “What is one thing I can do tomorrow that will enhance the current version of myself?”
A Few Moments for Yourself
Before you continue with your day, I’d love to leave you with a few questions to reflect on:
- In which area of your life do you feel you’re being invited to grow?
- What is one habit that no longer serves you?
- What is one small action you can take today that your future self will thank you for?
- What are three things you’re grateful for today that you may have overlooked yesterday?
I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Sometimes the smallest insight can inspire someone else to take their very first step.
Remember, your future isn’t created by what you intend to do someday. It’s created by the choices you make today.
If you’d like to begin building a daily gratitude habit, you can download my free eBook, 100 Days of Gratitude. It might just become the first small step towards a better version of you.
Be Grateful, Grow with Grace.
These aren’t just words I use as a tagline. They’ve become a way of living. Gratitude reminds me to appreciate where I am today, while grace reminds me that growth is a journey – not a race. Every day gives us another opportunity to become just a little better than yesterday.
