A journey at the crossroads

Halfway Through 2026… So, How’s It Really Going?

Lifestyle

A gentle mid-year reset to help you reflect, refocus and move forward with intention.

Time has a funny way of slipping past us.

It feels like only yesterday we welcomed the new year with fresh hopes, exciting plans and promises to ourselves. Yet somehow… Here we are. Halfway through 2026 already.

If I’m honest, my own year has looked nothing like I imagined in the beginning of this new year. There have been moments that tested my strength, challenged my beliefs, and forced me to slow down in ways I never expected.

Looking back, I could choose to call these months a failure. But I don’t. I believe some lessons can only be learned by living through them.

Perhaps life wasn’t delaying my journey. Perhaps it was quietly preparing me for something I couldn’t yet see.

Pause for a Moment...

Before you continue… Pause for just one minute. Take two or three slow, deep breaths. Let your shoulders relax. Give yourself permission to be fully present.

Halfway Through 2026

This isn’t about judging yourself.

It’s simply about becoming aware.

Then ask yourself:

If someone made a documentary about my first six months of 2026… what would the title be?

What surprised me?

What challenged me?

What made me smile?

What am I most proud of?

Write it out as, this is just for you. Nobody else has to read it.

Did Life Follow Your Plan?

At the beginning of the year, many of us had good intentions. We set goals, created vision boards, chose a word for the year, or simply promised ourselves that this would be the year things would finally change.

Now we’re halfway through the year. So, let me ask you…

Did life follow your plan?

If your answer is “yes,” congratulations! And if it didn’t… that’s not automatically a sign that you’re on the wrong path.

As I see it, most of us fall into one of three groups.

Group 1: “I’ve achieved most of my goals.”

First of all – well done! Take a moment to celebrate your progress. Too often we reach a milestone and immediately move the goalposts without acknowledging how far we’ve come.

But I’d like to ask you one more question.

Did you also become the person you hoped to become?

Success isn’t only measured by what we’ve accomplished. It’s also measured by who we’ve become along the way.

Have you grown in confidence? Have you become more patient, more resilient, more grateful?

Because sometimes the greatest achievement isn’t reaching the goal – it’s becoming the person who was capable of reaching it.

Group 2: “I’m somewhere in the middle.”

Perhaps you’ve made progress, but not as much as you had hoped. Maybe some goals are moving forward while others have been quietly collecting dust. That’s okay.

Progress doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Every small step counts. Every lesson learned counts. Every day you chose not to give up counts.

Instead of focusing on how far you still have to go, take a moment to recognise how far you’ve already come. Celebrate the wins that may have gone unnoticed. They matter more than you think.

Group 3: “My year completely fell apart.”

If this is where you find yourself, I want you to know something. You’re not alone!

Life has a way of surprising us. Illness, unexpected changes, financial struggles, broken relationships, disappointments, or simply feeling lost can quickly turn our carefully made plans upside down.

I’ve experienced that myself this year. Looking back, I could choose to see the first six months as a series of setbacks. Instead, I choose to see them as lessons, redirections, and opportunities for growth – lessons I couldn’t have learned any other way.

There’s a quote I love that says:

“Sometimes life closes doors because we’re standing outside the wrong room.”

At the time, a closed door can feel like rejection or failure.

But what if it’s actually protection? Or preparation? Or simply life gently guiding you towards a path that’s more aligned with who you’re becoming.

We don’t always understand the reason while we’re living through the challenge. Sometimes clarity only comes when we look back.

So, whichever group you find yourself in today, remember this:

The first six months of 2026 do not define the rest of your year. You still have the opportunity to reflect, adjust your course, and write the next chapter with greater wisdom than you had in January.

What Have the First Six Months Taught You?

Before you continue reading, I’d like you to do something that might feel a little old-fashioned – but incredibly powerful.

Grab a notebook and a pen. Or, if you prefer, open a blank document on your computer or phone.

Don’t just think about the questions below – write down your answers.

There’s something remarkable about putting your thoughts onto paper. It creates awareness. It helps you recognise patterns, celebrate growth, and uncover areas that may need a little more attention. You might even surprise yourself.

There are no right or wrong answers. This isn’t a test. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect, and become more intentional about the next six months of your life.

Take your time and complete the following sentences as honestly as you can:

  • This year has taught me…
  • I have become better at…
  • One challenge I’m grateful for is…
  • I need to let go of…
  • I need more of…
  • I need less of…
  • I finally realised that…
  • One belief I’ve outgrown is…
  • One habit that no longer serves me is…
  • One new habit I’d like to build over the next six months is…
  • The person I’m becoming is…

Don’t rush this exercise. Sometimes the first answer that comes to mind isn’t the most honest one. Sit with the questions for a few minutes and see what else appears.

When you’ve finished writing, read through your answers, and then yourself:

  • What patterns do I notice?
  • What am I most proud of?
  • Where have I been holding myself back?
  • What needs my attention during the second half of the year?
  • If I continue on my current path, where am I likely to be six months from now?
  • Is that where I truly want to be?

Now imagine it’s 31st December 2026. Picture yourself looking back on the second half of this year with a smile.

Ask yourself:

  • What would I love to have accomplished?
  • How do I want to feel?
  • What kind of person do I want to have become?
  • What daily habits would help me get there?
  • What’s one decision I can make today that my future self will thank me for?

Awareness is the first step towards meaningful change. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. But once you’re honest about where you are today, you can begin to consciously create where you want to be tomorrow.

The next six months are still unwritten. How do you want your story to be?

The Unexpected Gifts Hidden in Life's Detours

If someone had shown me a preview of my first six months of 2026 at the beginning of the year, I probably would have asked for a different script.

Like many people, I had plans. I had goals. I had a vision of how I thought the year would unfold. Instead, life took me down a road I hadn’t expected.

Looking back, I wouldn’t have chosen many of the experiences I’ve had this year. Some were difficult. Some were painful. Some left me questioning what was happening and why.

But here’s what I’ve come to realise… Not everything that feels like a setback is there to stop us. Sometimes it’s there to redirect us.

I’ve learned that…

Disappointment can become direction. When one door closes, another often opens – but only if we’re willing to stop staring at the closed one long enough to notice it.

Failure can become feedback. Every mistake, every missed opportunity, every plan that didn’t work teaches us something valuable if we’re willing to learn from it.

Loss can create space. Sometimes we have to let go of what no longer serves us before we can receive something that truly aligns with who we’re becoming.

And perhaps the hardest lesson of all…

Waiting can create wisdom. We live in a world that celebrates speed, instant results, and overnight success. Yet some of life’s greatest transformations happen quietly, behind the scenes, while nothing appears to be changing at all.

Looking back, I can already see that several of this year’s unexpected moments were gently nudging me towards a life that feels more authentic and aligned.

Do I understand everything that’s happened this year? No. Some experiences still don’t make complete sense. And maybe they never will. But I’ve learned long time ago that I don’t need all the answers before taking the next step.

Maybe that’s true for you as well. The challenge you’re facing today may one day become the story that inspires someone else. Or perhaps it will simply become the moment you realise life wasn’t working against you – it was quietly working in your favour.

Reflection Exercise: Rewrite Your Story

Now it’s your turn.

Take out your notebook again and think about one setback, disappointment, or unexpected challenge you’ve experienced during the first six months of this year. Write it down.

Then answer these questions as honestly as you can:

  • What might this experience be trying to teach me?
  • What strengths have I developed because of it?
  • How have I changed as a person because of this experience?
  • What opportunities might this challenge have created that I couldn’t see at the time?
  • If this happened for me rather than to me, what might the reason be?
  • How can I use what I’ve learned to create a stronger second half of the year?

You may not have all the answers today – and that’s perfectly okay. The purpose of this exercise isn’t to pretend that every challenge is easy or enjoyable. It’s to help you look beyond the struggle and ask a different question.

Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” Try asking, “What is this experience inviting me to become?”

That one question has the power to shift your perspective – and sometimes, your entire direction.

Your Mid-Year Reset

One of the things I love most about life is that it doesn’t ask us to wait until 1st January to begin again.

Every sunrise offers us a fresh start. Every new month gives us an opportunity to pause, reflect, and make a different choice.

Today can be your fresh start. Not because everything is suddenly perfect. Not because you have all the answers.

But because you’ve taken the time to become aware of where you are – and where you want to go.

So, before you close this page and return to your busy day, I’d like to invite you to complete one final exercise.

Step 1: Celebrate Your Wins

We often focus on everything that’s left to do while forgetting to acknowledge how far we’ve already come.

Take a moment to write down three wins from the first half of this year. They don’t have to be big.

Perhaps you started looking after your health. Maybe you had the courage to say no when you would previously have said yes. Perhaps you survived a season you never imagined you’d have to face.

Every step forward counts. Every lesson learned counts. Every time you chose not to give up counts.

Celebrate your progress, no matter how small it may seem.

Step 2: Forgive Yourself

Now it’s time to let go of the weight you’ve been carrying.

Forgive yourself for the goals you didn’t reach. Forgive yourself for the mistakes you’ve made. Forgive yourself for the days when your motivation disappeared. Forgive yourself for not knowing then what you know now.

You’re human.

Growth isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about learning, adjusting, and continuing to move forward with greater wisdom than before.

Step 3: Let Something Go

We often think growth is about adding more. More goals. More habits. More knowledge. But sometimes growth begins by letting something go.

Ask yourself:

What is one thing that’s no longer serving me?

It might be…

  • A limiting belief.
  • A habit that’s keeping you stuck.
  • Fear of what other people think.
  • A story you’ve been telling yourself for years.
  • Unrealistic expectations.
  • Or perhaps it’s simply the pressure to have everything figured out.

Whatever it is, make a conscious decision to leave it behind as you step into the second half of the year.

Step 4: Choose One Meaningful Focus

When we’re excited about making changes, it’s tempting to overhaul our entire lives overnight. I’ve learned that lasting transformation rarely works that way.

Instead of choosing ten new goals…

Choose one meaningful focus for July. Just one.

One area where, if you made consistent progress, it would create a positive ripple effect in the rest of your life. Small, intentional actions repeated consistently often lead to extraordinary results.

One Question That Can Change Everything

As you move through the next six months, I’d like to leave you with a question that has become one of my favourites. Before making an important decision, or saying yes to another commitment, or reacting to a difficult situation…

A journey towards self-discovery

Pause for a moment and ask yourself:

“Is this aligned with who I am becoming?”

Notice that the question isn’t: “Is this what I’ve always done?” or, “What will other people think?”

Instead, it gently brings your focus back to the person you’re choosing to become.

Every decision you make is like casting a vote for your future self. Some choices move you closer to that person. Others quietly pull you away.

The beautiful thing is that you get to choose. Not once a year. Not once a month. But every single day.

The first six months of 2026 have shaped you. The next six months are yours to create.

So, who do you want to become? And what’s one small thing that version of you would do tomorrow?

The Next Six Months Are Yours to Write

The first six months of 2026 are now part of your story. Every success. Every disappointment. Every lesson. Every unexpected twist.

They’ve all shaped the person you are today. You can’t go back and rewrite those chapters, and perhaps you wouldn’t want to. Even the difficult moments have taught you something, strengthened you, or gently nudged you in a new direction.

But here’s the exciting part… The next six months haven’t happened yet. They’re unwritten.

Filled with possibilities you can’t yet see, opportunities you haven’t yet imagined, and decisions only you can make.

The question isn’t whether the rest of the year will be perfect. Because it won’t. Life will continue to surprise you.

The real question is this:

Who do you want to become between now and the end of the year?

Not just what do you want to achieve. Who do you want to become?

Because when you focus on becoming the kind of person who lives with purpose, courage, gratitude and intention, your actions begin to reflect that identity. And over time, those actions shape your future.

So don’t wait until January to become the person you’re capable of becoming. Begin today. One decision. One intentional action. One conversation. One new habit. One day at a time.

Remember… Goals give us direction. Habits create momentum. But identity changes everything.

Because once you believe you’re becoming a healthier person, a kinder person, a courageous person, your decisions naturally begin to reflect that.

After taking time to reflect on the first half of your year, what is one lesson you’ll carry with you into the next six months? Or perhaps you’ve chosen one meaningful focus for July – I’d love to hear that too.

Share your thoughts in the comments below. Your story may be exactly the encouragement someone else needs today.

The story of your year isn’t finished yet. The pen is still in your hand.
