You Can Be Hurt Without Becoming Hurtful

When we are hurt, strong language can feel like an outlet. Calling someone an “idiot,” “asshole,” or worse can give us somewhere to put our anger when we don’t know what to do with everything we’re feeling. But what happens when the words we use to express our hurt start keeping us connected to the very thing that hurt us?

There is a difference between describing someone’s behaviour and defining who they are. We can acknowledge that someone’s actions were hurtful without turning them into a villain in our minds.

Being hurt doesn’t make us weak, and being angry doesn’t make us bad. But we can choose what we do with those feelings. We can speak our truth, set boundaries and protect ourselves without filling our hearts with hatred.

You can be hurt without becoming hurtful.
