Until recently, I had no idea that October was Black Cat Awareness Month. Then Asha came along, and suddenly the subject became much more personal.

Asha is my little black kitten from Calpe Cat Shelter – Live Love Miau, and he has taught me that there is so much more to a cat than the colour of its coat. He is curious, affectionate, incredibly vocal, adventurous, mischievous and absolutely convinced that anything I eat should probably be investigated.

He has also taught me that connection matters far more than appearance. Behind every cat’s colouring is an individual personality waiting to be discovered.

Black cats have been surrounded by superstition for centuries, but Asha certainly hasn’t brought me bad luck. Quite the opposite. He has brought laughter, companionship, cuddles and a whole new perspective on what it means to welcome a cat into your life.

This October, I’m celebrating black cats – and encouraging you to look beyond appearances, connect with the individual and consider adoption.
